IRIS Case Study |

"The use of KEYFUELS and IRIS gave us a grip on our fuel costs." says Keith Forster, MD of Boughey Distribution.
Boughey Distribution, the nationwide specialist ambient grocery logistics company with its main distribution hub in
Wardle, Cheshire, now makes significant cost savings since implementing Keyfuels fuel cards and Intelligent Reporting
Information System (IRIS).
The Challenge
Before IRIS, Boughey faced several challenges to managing their fleet efficiency. Drivers would draw fuel both on the road
and using their own yard tank fuel monitor. They had to input data manually to try and compile fuel usage figures and using
multiple data sources made costs difficult to control and the accurate capture of mileage almost impossible.
The accuracy of data input was also compromised because own yard data was stored on a till roll style printout, which often ran-out leaving incomplete and inaccurate data. Once collected the data still had to be checked manually. As Boughey's business grew from strength to strength the situation became unworkable, "Prior to KEYFUELS, the whole thing was a mess, and there was no visibility of our 'real cost of refuelling'," says Keith Forster, Managing Director of Boughey.
The Keyfuels Solution
Boughey realised that they needed a solution and turned to NWF, one of Keyfuels most successful dealers, to install and implement IRIS.
Over a period of three months NWF and Boughey worked through a plan to improve:
The Benefits
Having a 24/7 accessible and flexible single source of performance reporting data for on road and own yard fuel transactions
has given Boughey's management team the visibility of where and when drivers are using fuel and allows them to see any
irregularities.
Automatic Information reporting enables Boughey to analyse all fuel drawings, control costs and reduce resources. This alone saves them 3 days a month because they no longer have to manually check data. With IRIS and the fact that 99% of drivers now input accurate odometer readings, "fuel efficiency figures have gone from one of the least trusted figures to one of the most", says Keith. Boughey are now confident enough to create benchmark tables that are used to target areas for improvement and highlight vital management information includes the least efficient drivers in a fleet, the least and most effective vehicles and how different cost centres perform against each other. Once their performance is measured drivers are given incentives to improve their efficiency such as shared savings and newer vehicles.
The Results
"Even though fuel prices have gone up as a % of the total costs, fuel as a commodity has gone down",
says Keith. "The use of KEYFUELS and IRIS gave us a grip on our fuel costs". Now drivers are sourcing
and utilising fuel more efficiently Boughey are making an average saving of 3 pence per litre (this equals £15,000 a year or a
5% increase in fuel efficiency). In fact Keyfuels and IRIS means a 1% cost saving on everything they do. With tangible results
like this it is hardly surprising that Boughey want to continue to work closely with Keyfuels' dealer NWF in order to further
increase their efficiencies in the future.
